General Notes
This product (Catalog No. CABT-BL4620) is a rabbit-derived polyclonal antibody raised against human FAM13C. This antibody exhibits cross-reactivity with FAM13C from mouse. It has been affinity purified by Protein A. FAM13C, or family with sequence similarity 13 member C, is a protein-coding gene located on the long arm of human chromosome 10 at position 10q21.1 (GRCh38.p14: NC_000010.11, 59246129..59363181, complement), spanning 20 exons and encoding multiple isoforms of a protein that belongs to the FAM13 family. The encoded protein isoforms exhibit conserved domains, including a NAP (nucleosome assembly protein) domain in some variants, which may contribute to chromatin organization, and a FlaD domain in others, potentially involved in cellular motility processes akin to archaeal flagella components. This gene was first identified through large-scale cDNA sequencing efforts in the 1990s. FAM13C demonstrates broad tissue expression, with particularly high levels in the brain (RPKM 29.0) and adrenal gland (RPKM 16.8), as well as detection in 21 other adult tissues and various fetal organs such as the adrenal, heart, intestine, kidney, lung, and stomach during weeks 10-20 of gestation. In fetal development, it is also associated with the induction of circular RNAs, highlighting potential regulatory roles in gene expression. Orthologs exist in other species, including mice (Mus musculus), where it is expressed in nasal cavity epithelium, olfactory cortex, and telencephalon ventricular layer. Research has linked FAM13C to several human diseases and traits. Overexpression of FAM13C serves as an independent prognostic marker for poor clinical outcomes in prostate cancer, with studies showing its strong predictive value beyond traditional factors like Gleason score. Genome-wide association studies have identified FAM13C as a locus exhibiting pleiotropy for osteoporosis-related phenotypes, influencing bone mineral density and fracture risk. Additionally, variants in FAM13C are associated with plasma concentrations of four phospholipid fatty acids in the de novo lipogenesis pathway, suggesting a role in lipid metabolism. These findings underscore FAM13C's multifaceted involvement in cancer, skeletal health, and metabolic processes, though its precise molecular functions remain under active investigation.
