Mammaglobin A is a member of the uteroglobin family, expressed by breast cancer cell lines, primary breast tumors and over-expressed in a high proportion of metastatic breast tumors, independent of tumor grade. This has paved the way for many studies into its potential use in the differential diagnosis of metastatic cancer, and as a possible immunotherapeutic target. Mammaglobin A, a highly specific biomarker for breast tissue, was originally thought to be absent from tumors of non-breast origin. More recent evidence using immunohistochemical studies suggests that the co-expression of mammaglobin A with lipophilin B (SCGB1D2), can be detected in both normal and malignant tissues of the ovary, cervix and uterus.
