Pneumolysin is a putative virulence factor of the gram-positive bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. Pneumolysin (pneumococcal hemolysin) is an intracellular protein produced by all strains of S. pneumoniae and is a cytoplasmic cholesterol-dependent cytolysin forming large pores in cholesterol-containing membranes and is therefore cytotoxic to mammalian cell. The molecular weight of pneumolysin is approximately 53 kD.
