Generation of a broad-band picosecond laser pulse through parametric fluorescence
Broad-band picosecond laser pulses are generated by use of the parametric fluorescence technique. The pomp radiation used is second harmonic of an active and passive mode-locked ruby laser, and the pulse duration is 35 ps. Of the various nonlinear crystals, KDP was chosen for its large nonlinearity and good angle-sensitivity, walk-off angle, and time-delay properties. The crystal is focused only on the vertical plane by a cylindrical lens in order to work out the restriction through walls-off. KDP is a negative uniaxial crystal and is phase-matched to type I. In phase matching of the parametric fluorescence a maximal snatching angle exists; above which phase matching terminates. Approaching the maximal angle, the spectral region that is effectively phase-matched becomes larger. Near the degenerate interaction, a maximal spectral width of circa 50 nm was obtained. The energy conversion efficiency reached up to 5 % in the saturated phase. This picosecond continuum can be applied in various picosecond nonlinear experiments, such as spectral hole burning.
