General Notes
This product (Catalog No. DPABH-01125) is a rabbit-derived polyclonal antibody raised against human OR52A1. It has been affinity purified by Protein A. OR52A1 is a protein-coding gene that encodes an olfactory receptor, a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium to initiate neuronal signaling for smell perception. The gene, officially named olfactory receptor family 52 subfamily A member 1, spans a single coding exon and is part of the largest multigene family in the human genome, which includes over 800 olfactory receptor genes. It is located on the short arm of chromosome 11 at position 11p15.4, within the extended human beta-globin gene cluster, and produces a 7-transmembrane domain protein (UniProt accession Q9UKL2) that transduces odorant signals via G protein mediation. While primarily expressed in olfactory sensory neurons of the nasal epithelium, OR52A1 transcripts have also been detected in erythroid cells, suggesting potential non-olfactory roles, though these remain underexplored. Functionally, the OR52A1 protein belongs to the rhodopsin-like GPCR family and is involved in the detection of chemical stimuli during sensory perception of smell, as well as broader G protein-coupled receptor signaling pathways. No specific odorant ligands have been definitively identified for OR52A1, consistent with many olfactory receptors that recognize broad spectra of volatile compounds. Genetic variations in OR52A1 and related neuronal signaling genes have been associated with differences in human alcohol response, highlighting its potential influence beyond olfaction. Additionally, RNAi-mediated knockdown of OR52A1 has been shown to inhibit HIV-1 replication in certain cell lines, indicating possible ectopic functions in host-pathogen interactions. Orthologs exist in other mammals, such as mice, supporting conserved roles in chemosensation.
