General Notes
This product (Catalog No. DPABH-10567) is a rabbit-derived polyclonal antibody raised against human OR2Y1. This antibody exhibits cross-reactivity with OR2Y1 from mouse. It has been affinity purified by Protein A. OR2Y1 is a protein-coding gene in humans that encodes the olfactory receptor protein 2Y1, also known as OR5-2, which belongs to the rhodopsin-like G protein-coupled receptor family and functions in the detection of odorant molecules to initiate smell perception. Located on the long arm of chromosome 5 at position 5q35.3 (GRCh38 coordinates: 180,739,123-180,740,058, reverse strand), the gene consists of a single exon and produces a transcript that translates into a 311-amino-acid protein with seven transmembrane domains characteristic of olfactory receptors. Olfactory receptors like OR2Y1 interact with odorants in the nasal epithelium, triggering G protein-mediated signal transduction that leads to neuronal activation and the perception of smell; this gene is part of the largest gene family in the human genome, comprising over 400 olfactory receptor genes. The protein's structure includes conserved motifs for ligand binding and G protein coupling, enabling it to recognize specific odorants, though the precise ligands for OR2Y1 remain to be fully characterized. Expression of OR2Y1 is primarily restricted to olfactory sensory neurons in the nose, consistent with its role in olfaction, and it shares orthologs across mammals, indicating evolutionary conservation of this sensory function. While OR2Y1 has no strongly associated diseases in current databases, olfactory receptor genes like it can exhibit polymorphisms that influence odor perception and individual differences in smell sensitivity. The gene was first annotated through large-scale cDNA sequencing efforts and phylogenetic analyses of the olfactory receptor repertoire, contributing to understanding the genomic organization of this superfamily.
