Serpinf2 Full Name
serpin peptidase inhibitor, clade F (alpha-2 antiplasmin, pigment epithelium derived factor), member 2
Serpinf2 Introduction
The protein SERPINF2 functions as alpha-2 antiplasmin to control fibrinolysis through its ability to block plasmin enzyme activity which breaks down fibrin blood clots. The liver produces this protein which functions as the primary blood plasma factor that controls plasmin enzyme activity. The protein SERPINF2 controls blood clotting and fibrin breakdown to create stable hemostasis while stopping uncontrolled clot breakdown. The protein SERPINF2 functions independently from other serpins in the superfamily because it exhibits unique biochemical properties which enable it to control fibrin matrix stability.

Plasmin proteolytic activity becomes controlled through SERPINF2 binding which forms short-term and long-term complexes that affect how long blood clots persist. The protein achieves stability in blood clots through activated factor XIII (FXIIIa) cross-linking which protects it from fibrinolytic breakdown. The protein SERPINF2 functions beyond fibrinolysis because it interacts with plasmin-dependent pathways to control extracellular matrix degradation and cellular movement which regulates tissue remodeling and inflammatory responses.
Medical conditions develop because of abnormal SERPINF2 protein amounts and because the protein structure does not function correctly. The loss of SERPINF2 function through genetic mutations or acquired conditions leads to excessive fibrin degradation which results in bleeding complications because of premature clot dissolution. The presence of high SERPINF2 levels creates conditions that promote blood clotting and doctors have found this protein in patients with deep vein thrombosis and myocardial infarction and metabolic syndrome. The uncontrolled regulation of plasmin inhibition by SERPINF2 results in diseases that stem from imbalanced extracellular matrix which includes liver fibrosis and particular inflammatory disorders that show its dual role in vascular and tissue preservation.
