FIV Core Antigen Full Name
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus Core Antigen
FIV Core Antigen Introduction
The FIV Core Antigen, most commonly referring to the p24 capsid protein, is a major structural component of the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) particle. FIV is a lentivirus within the Retroviridae family, closely related to HIV. The p24 protein forms the conical core or capsid that encapsulates the viral RNA genome and essential enzymes (reverse transcriptase, integrase). It is a product of the viral gag gene, which is translated into a polyprotein precursor (Pr55^gag^) and subsequently cleaved by the viral protease during the maturation process. This cleavage releases mature p24, which then self-assembles into the stable core structure, a critical step for producing infectious viral particles.

Primary Role in Viral Replication and Lifecycle
The core antigen plays a dual role in the viral lifecycle: protection and delivery. Following the fusion of the viral envelope with the target cell membrane, the viral core containing p24 is released into the cytoplasm. This core acts as a protective shell, facilitating the safe transport and subsequent reverse transcription of the viral RNA into DNA. The stability of the p24 capsid is finely regulated; it must remain intact long enough to deliver the viral genetic material to the nucleus but eventually disassemble (uncoat) to release the pre-integration complex. Its structure and function are therefore essential for establishing a productive infection in host cells, primarily CD4+ T lymphocytes and macrophages.
Clinical and Epidemiological Relevance
A positive test for FIV core antigen has direct clinical implications for cat health and management. It confirms FIV infection, which is a lifelong condition. Infected cats are at increased risk for secondary infections, hematologic disorders, and neurological issues due to progressive immune deficiency. From an epidemiological standpoint, detection aids in controlling the spread of the virus, which occurs mainly through deep bite wounds. Identifying positive cats allows for informed management decisions, such as keeping them indoors to prevent fighting and transmission to other cats. Monitoring antigen levels (viral load) can also provide prognostic information, though this is more common in research settings.
