General Description
Sibutramine is an appetite suppressant which has been discontinued in many countries. It works as a serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor similar to a tricyclic antidepressant. There have been many studies supporting the activity of sibutramine in reducing food intake through enhancing satiety, and its effects may be due to increased serotonergic and noradrenergic activity. However, the hypophagic activity observed with this agent may be only part of its overall weight-loss effect. The most common adverse effects reported with sibutramine were dry mouth, increase in blood pressure, constipation, and tachycardia. Sibutramine can also cause side effects on the central nervous system like xerostomia, headache, numbness, and paraesthesia, and on the alimentary system like nausea and constipation. (Hansen, D. L., et al., 1999; Jung, J., et al., 2006)
