Schizosaccharomyces pombe, also called "fission yeast", is a species of yeast. It is used as a model organism in molecular and cell biology. It is a unicellular eukaryote, whose cells are rod-shaped. Cells typically measure 3 to 4 micrometres in diameter
rna1 is the GTPase activator for the nuclear Ras-related regulatory protein spi1 (Ran), converting it to the putatively inactive GDP-bound state. rna1 is located in the cytoplasm throughout the cell cycle and plays a direct role in protein import into the nucleus in S. cerevisiae and S. pombe. It contains 8 LRR (leucine-rich) repeats.
