Introduction

Rheumatoid factor (RF) is an autoantibody directed mainly against the Fc region of IgG antibodies. In other words, RF is an antibody that binds to another antibody. Most clinically relevant RF is IgM-type RF, although RF can also exist as IgG, IgA, or IgE isotypes. In diagnostic testing, RF is commonly measured as a biomarker associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), but RF is not specific only to RA. It can also be found in other autoimmune diseases, chronic infections, liver diseases, some malignancies, and occasionally in healthy elderly individuals.
