Ideally a diagnostic assay for dengue should be rapid, simple, highly sensitive and specific, and preferably able to differentiate between primary and secondary infections, as well as identify the virus serotype. Creative Diagnostics offers a range of reagents designed to develop serologic assays for the early and specific diagnosis of a dengue infection. 

Dengue is a member of the Flavivirus genus and it is comprised of four distinct serotypes (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3 and DEN-4). Infection of any serotype can result in a range of clinical manifestations from asymptomatic infection to dengue fever or the severe dengue hemorrhagic fever. Immunity to one serotype does not produce immunity to the other serotypes. 

Serological detection has become the preferred method for diagnosing an acute dengue infection.  The optimal testing window is from the onset of fever to 10 days post infection as it is during this time period that (1) the dengue non-structural protein 1 (NS1) antigen can be detected, and (2) the differential patterns of IgM and IgG antibody responses can be distinguished in patients experiencing a first (primary) vs. subsequent (secondary) infection. The development of new generation tests in rapid formats can detect both the NS1 antigen and the IgG/IgM response in the four dengue serotypes within one assay and require only the use of a single serum sample.
