Introduction
The Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) Fusion (F) protein is a key viral surface glycoprotein responsible for mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane, a critical step for viral entry. The F protein is synthesized as an inactive precursor, F₀, which must be cleaved into two subunits, F₁ and F₂, to become fusion-competent. This cleavage is a major determinant of NDV virulence — strains with F proteins that can be cleaved by ubiquitous host proteases are typically more virulent.
