General Description
SS-A is a RNA protein particle (ribonucleoprotein, RNP) ubiquitously distributed in all tissues. It is composed of two proteins (60kDa and 52kDa) associated with at least four small uridin-rich cytoplasmic RNAs (hyRNA, human cytoplasmic RNA); its function is yet unknown. Autoantibodies against SS-A (formerly named Ro after prototype subject Robert) as well as SSB (formerly named La after prototype subject Lane) are typical markers for studying Sjögren`s syndrome (SS) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
