Methotrexate is in the class of medications called antimetabolites. The drug is used to treat severe psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis and certain types of cancer. It works by slowing the proliferation of cells. Specifically, it inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase that is necessary for the synthesis of folic acid, which is required for the synthesis of DNA, RNA, thymidylates and proteins.
