General Description
Anti-LKM-1 Antibody (Anti-Liver Kidney Microsomal Type 1 Antibody) is a key autoantibody in the diagnosis and understanding of autoimmune liver diseases, particularly in Type 2 Autoimmune Hepatitis (AIH-2).
AIH-2 is characterized by the presence of anti-LKM-1 antibodies, which target cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6), a liver enzyme.
In pediatric AIH, anti-LKM-1 antibodies are detected in over 90% of cases, often in conjunction with anti-liver cytosol type 1 (LC-1) antibodies.
The presence of anti-LKM-1 antibodies is thought to play a direct role in liver damage. The antibodies can trigger an immune response that leads to inflammation and destruction of liver cells.
