Introduction
The HIV-2 envelope is composed of trimers of gp125 and gp36, two heavily glycosylated proteins that are linked by noncovalent bonds and embedded in a lipid bilayer whose source is the host cell cytoplasmic membrane. The surface gp125 mediates the initial steps in the virus cycle binding to cellular CD4 and/or to chemokine receptors. The transmembrane gp36 mediates virus-to-cell fusion, participates in the assembly of new viruses, and counteracts the activity of tetherin, enabling the release of new virus particles.
