Vitamins are nutrients your body needs to function and fight off disease. There are 13 vitamins that are essential to your body working well. Vitamins are present in foods and foodstuffs of plant and animal origin. They can be divided into water soluble vitamins (e.g. vitamin C and the vitamins of the B group) and fat soluble vitamins (e.g. vitamin A, D, E, K).  Aside from vitamins K and D, the human body cannot synthetise vitamins. Because of this we need to get them through food or in some cases supplements.


Vitamins strengthen the immune system, enable the body to use other nutrients, complement as enzymes, detoxify the organism and reduce the cardiac infarction risk. The body needs a balanced and varied diet to cover its needs along with an adequate supply of vitamins in order to prevent many pathologies (diseases associated with ageing, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer). An over-consumption of vitamins can lead to medium- or long-term toxic effects. Conversely, an inadequate intake can lead to deficiencies or even malnutrition as well as clinical and/or pathological disorders.

To avoid these signs of deficiency or overdose, there are legal regulations in relation to the vitamin content in foodstuffs. This is usually done by mixing or spraying so called pre-mixes into the product. The foundation of analysis is to check if legal regulations are being followed and if the declared vitamin content is indeed in the product and if marketing claims of the producers are justified. For quality control of the manufacturing process of foodstuffs and compliance with the legal regulations, reliable testing is therefore essential. By performing regular determination of the vitamin content, errors in production (for examples problems during the addition of vitamin mixtures) can be recognized early. Hence, it is necessary that manufacturers as well as supervision authorities control vitamin contents.

Test methods to analyze the vitamin content

Vitamin detection can be carried out with the instrumental method (HPLC, LC-MS/MS) in combination with immune affinity columns for pre-purification and concentration of the samples.

ELISA tests allow a quantitative analysis of single added vitamins (folic acid, vitamin B12 and Biotin) by an antigen-antibody reaction and evaluation by means of microplate photometer. The immunoassay kit allows for the quantitative determination of Vitamin in various samples, including multivitamin tablets, capsules, multivitamin juices, multivitamin jam, grain products, multivitamin sweets etc.

Microbiological test in microplate format is also a method for vitamin testing. The microorganisms lyophilized on a microplate increase independence of the added vitamin concentration, the growth of microorganisms is measured turbidimetrically in a microplate reader. The amount of vitamin is directly proportional to the turbidity. The determination is possible for all water-soluble vitamins.
