Introduction
NP (nucleoprotein) of Equine Influenza Virus (EIV) is a highly conserved internal protein that encapsidates the viral negative-sense RNA genome and forms ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes together with the polymerase subunits PB1, PB2, and PA. Encoded by segment 5 of the EIV genome, NP plays an essential role in viral transcription, replication, and nuclear import of RNPs, and it contains nuclear localization signals that interact with host importins. Because NP is strongly immunogenic and more conserved than surface glycoproteins, it is widely used as a molecular marker for diagnostic assays, evolutionary studies, and evaluation of cross-reactive T-cell immunity in influenza-infected horses.
