The gp45 protein of Equine Infectious Anemia Virus (EIAV) is the transmembrane subunit of the viral envelope glycoprotein complex. It is generated by proteolytic cleavage of the Env precursor into the surface glycoprotein gp90 and the transmembrane glycoprotein gp45. Functionally analogous to HIV-1 gp41, gp45 anchors the viral spikes in the membrane and mediates membrane fusion between the virus and host cell during entry. Because it is more conserved than the surface subunit, gp45 plays an essential role in viral infectivity and is a key target for host immune responses and for diagnostic or vaccine research.
