The primary capsid protein of BKV is VP1 which presents the following structural features and functional characteristics.
| Feature | Details |
| Structural Features | VP1 forms an icosahedral structure with T=7 symmetry, 50 nm in diameter. The capsid is made up of 72 pentamers linked by disulfide bonds and combined with VP2 or VP3 proteins. |
| Receptor Binding | VP1 binds to glycosphingolipids with terminal α2-8-linked sialic acids (e.g., GT1b and GD1b) on cell surfaces to facilitate viral particle attachment. |
| Viral Entry | The attachment of VP1 triggers viral particle internalization mainly by caveolin-mediated endocytosis, followed by transport to the endoplasmic reticulum. |
| Viral Replication | VP1 binds to replicated genomic DNA in the nucleus and participates in nucleosome arrangement around viral DNA during later stages of infection. |
| Immunogenicity | VP1 triggers a strong immune response. Neutralizing antibodies target VP1, helping the virus evade host immune detection. |
| Serotyping | Four BKV serotypes (I-IV) based on genetic analysis of VP1 sequence, differentiated by variations in the BC loop region. The virus cannot survive without VP1, as changes in the VP1 ORF lead to a non-viable virus. VP1 is critical for viral entry, replication, and virion assembly. |

Our BKV VP1 Antibodies serve as essential tools across multiple research disciplines.
BKV has a circular 5,000 bp genome that encodes six proteins: The virus's genome produces six proteins which include three capsid polypeptides (VP1, VP2 and VP3) as well as three non-structural proteins (the large T antigen (TAg), the small T antigen (tAg), and agnoprotein). The virus establishes long-term infection in the renal tract resulting in asymptomatic reactivation and periodic low-level urinary shedding detected in 5 to 10% of healthy people.
Our Antibodies are ready for laboratory use to advance research and improve understanding of diseases associated with BKV VP1 protein and help you reach exceptional research results. Not sure about how to choose the right solution for your project? Contact Us
