BC48 is an immunodominant merozoite surface protein of Babesia caballi, the protozoan parasite responsible for equine piroplasmosis in horses and other equids. Encoded by the BC48 gene, this protein is expressed on the surface of merozoites and is secreted into the host bloodstream during infection. Because BC48 elicits a strong and relatively specific antibody response, recombinant BC48 and its epitopes have been widely used in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and other serological tests recommended by the WOAH (OIE) for the diagnosis and surveillance of B. caballi infection.
