Introduction
DNA topoisomerase 1 is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the TOP1 gene. This gene encodes a DNA topoisomerase, an enzyme that controls and alters the topologic states of DNA during transcription. This enzyme catalyzes the transient breaking and rejoining of a single strand of DNA which allows the strands to pass through one another, thus altering the topology of DNA. This gene is localized to chromosome 20 and has pseudogenes which reside on chromosomes 1 and 22.
Antigen Description
Type Itopoisomerases cut one strand of double-stranded DNA, relax the strand, andreanneal the strands. They are further subdivided into two structurally andmechanistically distinct topoisomerases: type IA and type IB. Type IAtopoisomerases change the linking number of a circular DNA strand by units ofstrictly 1. Type IB topoisomerases change the linking number by multiples of1 (n). Historically, type IA topoisomerases are referred to as prokaryotictopo I, while type IB topoisomerases are referred to as eukaryotictopoisomerase. This distinction, however, no longer applies as type IA and typeIB topoisomerases exist in all domains of life.
