GPC1 (Glypican 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with GPC1 include biliary atresia and omodysplasia. Among its related pathways are Signaling by GPCR and Metabolism. GO annotations related to this gene include copper ion binding and fibroblast growth factor binding. An important paralog of this gene is GPC4. Cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycans are composed of a membrane-associated protein core substituted with a variable number of heparan sulfate chains. Members of the glypican-related integral membrane proteoglycan family (GRIPS) contain a core protein anchored to the cytoplasmic membrane via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol linkage. These proteins may play a role in the control of cell division and growth regulation.

Mouse monoclonal antibody raised against full length recombinant GPC1. Note=Associates (via the heparan sulfate side chains) with fibrillar APP-beta amyloid peptides in primitive and classic amyloid plaques and may be involved in the deposition of these senile plaques in the Alzheimer disease (AD) brain (PubMed:15084524). Note=Misprocessing of GPC1 is found in fibroblasts of patients with Niemann-Pick Type C1 disease. This is due to the defective deaminative degradation of heparan sulfate chains (PubMed:16645004). Glypican-1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the GPC1 gene. The function about GPC1 antigen include heparan sulfate proteoglycan binding.
