Introduction
M protein (Ml) of influenza virus has an important structural role in the virion. It is located on the interior side of the lipid bilayer, forming a shell which surrounds the nucleocapsid. However, its functional role in the viral replicative cycle remains elusive. The only biological activity demonstrated for M protein has been its ability to inhibit the polymerase of influenza virus, possibly modulating viral replication. Complete removal of M protein from the polymerase complex results in greatly enhanced polymerase activity.
