This gene encodes a mitochondrial integral membrane protein. Following proteolytic processing of this protein, a small peptide (P-beta) is formed and translocated to the nucleus. This gene may be involved in signal transduction via regulated intramembrane proteolysis of membrane-tethered precursor proteins. Variation in this gene has been associated with increased risk for type 2 diabetes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. Biological flora of Central Europe: "Ornithogalum angustifolium" nom prov, Syn pp O-orthophyllun ssp kochii equals O-kochii PARL., O-gussonei TEN.)
The article deals with a diploid taxon of the Ornithogalum umbellatum-group, which in the past has been confused with O. tenuifolium, O. gussonii, O. orthophyllum and O. kochii in Central Europe. Reliable occurrences of this bulbous geophyte are known from the Elbe valley between Bohemia (Czech Republic) and North Germany. A detailed description of karyological, morphological and ecological characters of that critical taxon is given. The relevant literature about the O. umbellatum-group is reviewed.
