Antigen Description

The protein encoded by this gene, pre-angiotensinogen orangiotensinogen precursor, is expressed in the liver and is cleavedby the enzyme renin in response to lowered blood pressure. Theresulting product, angiotensin I, is then cleaved by angiotensinconverting enzyme (ACE) to generate the physiologically activeenzyme angiotensin II. The protein is involved in maintaining bloodpressure and in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension andpreeclampsia. Mutations in this gene are associated withsusceptibility to essential hypertension, and can cause renaltubular dysgenesis, a severe disorder of renal tubular development.Defects in this gene have also been associated with non-familialstructural atrial fibrillation, and inflammatory bowel disease.
